Assignment 13 Research & Inspiration Notes

Exquisite Corpse- a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. (Wikipedia)

The technique was invented by Surrealists and is similar to an old parlour game called Consequences in which players write in turn on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of the writing, and then pass it to the next player for a further contribution. (Wikipedia)

Surrealism- is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for the visual artworks and writings of the group members. (Wikipedia)
Exquisite Corpse

I like this one because you can see how
all the different styles of the artist came
together and how they each have a
different but unique style.

The Creative Process

Why is this process important?

1) improve con
2) ability to plan & time your work
3) raise the quality of work
4) communicate more effectively.

THE CREATIVE PROCESS

Step 1: Research- The more you know, the easier the project will be! Research the client and the competition. Get online, look in magazines, listen to music, pay attention to the world around you.. whatever you need to do to get inspired.

Step 2: Brainstorm/Inspiration- Striving to be unique and innovative while still following the current trends, ensures a fresh and creative approach.

Ask yourself these questions:

What kind of message am i trying to communicate?

Who is my audience?

What am i trying to tell them?

What kind of color or style will work for this audience?

Step 3: Sketch- Thumbnails, thumbnails, and more thumbnails. Sketch to get your thoughts out and to work through ideas.

Step 4: Execute- Implement your ideas. Combine type and imagery, into a well developed composition. Utilize design principles and visual organization guidelines to help. Try techniques, explore, possible options, and analyze the outcome. If you get stuck, walk away and clear your head. If the piece doesn't look  how you imagined, and it isn't working, try another idea. Forcing an idea wont result in a good design.

Step 5: Critique & Revise- Take a step back, (literally) and look at your design with an objective eye. Make sure the design effectively conveys the message, to the intended audience. If it doesn't, go back and tweak the composition until it does! Asking others for their opinion will help this process.

Photo Composition

Snapshot= a quick shot, often spontaneous, taken to record a moment in time.

Photograph= an image taken with care or thought.

Rule of 3rd's= imaginary lines drawn dividing from the frame of your camera into third's both horizontally and vertically. Fill up the entire frame with the subject for a close up image.

Leading Lines= use the lines created within the foreground or background of the composition to lead the viewer's eye through the photo.

Point of View= change the way your subject is perceived buy changing the camera position. If you  are photographing a subject that you want to seem very tall, compose the shot snap the camera is looking upwards ...and vice versa.

Simplicity= keep your background simple and clear of clutter. The mood and effectiveness of a photo can be altered by what is in the background. A chaotic composition will cause the viewer to look away.

Semester Reflection

This semester we worked with Photoshop and Illustrator. I really enjoyed working with Photoshop better than Illustrator because I felt like in Photoshop that it had more tools that you could use to make an image better. I've enjoyed this class because i feel like we have more freedom that a regular class does. What i like most about this class is that we get to work with Mac's. I've never used one until this year so it was fun using a Mac. I like using the Mac better than a regular computer because Mac's are more fun to use and i think that they are faster than the computer that i have at home. I also like these better because you can change the color of the stickies, you have a better webcam with different types of affects to use when taking a picture, and you can make any picture you what the background with different types of options.   If I could change one thing about this semester is that I would've worked harder to keep up with the blogs and the assignments. Honestly, i think this is the hardest I've ever had to work in order to pass a class. This semester, i think i could've tried harder to get my work done.

Review Week 17

Who shot the serif? Question:

Have you learned something?

I learned that there numerous kinds of serif but the two main types are Adnate and Abrupt. The Adnate serif is more organic. The Abrupt Serif is squarer and more rigid , and doesn't flow into the base bottom letterform; the slab serif is a good example of an abrupt. Its not rude; its just square.
