Semester Reflection

This semester we worked with Photoshop and Illustrator. I really enjoyed working with Photoshop better than Illustrator because I felt like in Photoshop that it had more tools that you could use to make an image better. I've enjoyed this class because i feel like we have more freedom that a regular class does. What i like most about this class is that we get to work with Mac's. I've never used one until this year so it was fun using a Mac. I like using the Mac better than a regular computer because Mac's are more fun to use and i think that they are faster than the computer that i have at home. I also like these better because you can change the color of the stickies, you have a better webcam with different types of affects to use when taking a picture, and you can make any picture you what the background with different types of options.   If I could change one thing about this semester is that I would've worked harder to keep up with the blogs and the assignments. Honestly, i think this is the hardest I've ever had to work in order to pass a class. This semester, i think i could've tried harder to get my work done.

Review Week 17

Who shot the serif? Question:

Have you learned something?

I learned that there numerous kinds of serif but the two main types are Adnate and Abrupt. The Adnate serif is more organic. The Abrupt Serif is squarer and more rigid , and doesn't flow into the base bottom letterform; the slab serif is a good example of an abrupt. Its not rude; its just square.

Review Week 4

Why/how can icons be used to communicate? They can used to communicate what people see and how they an interpret them.
What is the difference between copyright and public domain? Copyright is the exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same and public domain is not something that you can copy.

How can you avoid plagairism in this class? In other classes? By not copying and pasting work from websites and other people in the class.
Via the internet, find 2 examples of common icons that clearly communicate their message. Post both in this entry.

Podcast 3

Define principles of design? Concepts used to arrange the structural elements of a composition.

What do the principles of design affect? The expressive content, or the message of the work.

What is the principle of repetition?  Repeating some aspect or element of the design throught the entitre document.

Describe ways that the principle of repetition helps the composition/audience? Works with patterns to make a composition seem active, repeating design elements helps the viewer navigate through the piece, helps unify and strengtheny tying togthere separate parts.

What are ways that you can incorporate repetition into your designs? Bold front, thick line, certain bullet, color, design element, particular format, and spatial relationship.

What should you avoid when working with repetition?  Not to use to much accent.

What is the principle of proportion/scale? The relative size and scale of the various elements of design.

What is the most universal standard of measure when judging size? The human body.

How can the principle of proportion/scale be used as an attention getter? Unusual or unexpected scale can be used.

What is the principle of balance? Distribution of heavy and light elements on the page.

Which kinds of elements/shapes visually weigh heavier/greater? Large and small elements.

What is another name for symmetrical balance? Formal balance.

Define symmetrical balance? Occurs when the wight of a composition is evenly distribuated around a central vertical or horizontal axis.

What is another name for asymmetrical balance? Informal balance.

Define asymmetrical balance? Occurs when the weight of a composition is not evenly distributed around the axis.

What is the principle of emphasis? Stressing of a particular area of focus rather than the maze of details of equal importance.

What happens to a design that has no focus? Nothing stand out.

What is a focal point and how is it created? An area where the eye tends to go first. Its created by making one element dominant with all other areas contributing but subordinate.

How many components of a composition can be a focal point? No more than one.

What ways can emphasis be created in a design? By sudden change in direction, size, shape, texture, color, tone, and line.

What is the principle of unity? The wholeness of the compostion.

What three ways can unity be obtained?
1. Put objects close to one another.

2. Make thing similar.

3. Direct vision by a line that travels around the design.

What is the principle of variety? Pertains to difference and diversity.

What ways can a designer add variety to a design? Vary textures, color, and shapes, and alter thier contrast, tone, and intestity.

Why is it important to find the right balance between unity and variety? To have a successful, effective design.

What is figure? Part of a composition that we pay attention to.

What is another name for figure? Positive shape.

What is ground? The surrounding area around a figure.

What is another name for ground? Negative space.

When a composition is abstract? When it has no elements.

Why must a designer consider the composition as a whole? Balancing figure and ground to make the image clear

What is the principle of rhythm? Continuity, recurrence or organized movement in space and time.

How is rhythm achieved? Through the orderly repetition of any element, line, shape, value, toner, and texture.

What three ways can rhythm occur in a design?
1. Intervals between the elements.

2. With a more organic, flowing, sense of movement.

3. A sequence of shapes through a progeression of steps.

How does rhythm help a composition/design? Can help deliver the message by controlling the viewer's eye movement.

What is the principle of contrast? Occurs when two related elements are different.

How can contrast help a design? Adds visual interest.

What is wrong with having too much or too little contrast in a design? Too much similarity becomes monotonus and boring and on the other hand , too much contrast can be confusing.

What is the key to working with contrast? To mkae sure that the difference are obvious.

What are some common ways of creating contrast? Size, value, color, type, texture, shape, alignment, direction, and movement.

Describe white light? Equal parts of all colors in visible spectrum.

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"? Absorb or reflect colors in the visible spectrum.

What is a glass prism? A transparent triangular object.

What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism? Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

Describe hue? The color its self.

When does white light occur? When light is reflected back to your eye.

When does black light occur? When there is no light.

How color is perceived depends on what? The type of light its seen with.

What is a color wheel? A wheel that shows all the primary, secondary, tertitary colors.

What are primary colors? Name them? Red, blue and yellow.

What are secondary colors? Name them? 2 primary colors mixed togther. Orange, green & violet.

What are tertiary colors? Name them? When primary & secondary colors are mixed togther. Red orange, yellow orange, blue green, yellow green, blue violet & red violet.

What are neutral colors? How can they be created? Colors of very low saturation. By mixing complentary color togther.

How can a neutral color help a design? Help put the focus on other colors.

What are complementary colors? Name them? Colors that are opposite on the color wheel. Red and green, orange and blue, and yellow and violet.

What is color value? Lightness and darkness of a hue(color).

What is a shade? A low value color.

What is a tint? A high value color.

What is saturation/intensity? Brightness of a color.

What happens when you mix complementary colors together? You produce a dull tone.

Describe color harmony? A pleasing arrangement of parts music, color, and poetry.

What is a color scheme? Used to create style and appeal.

Describe a monochromatic color scheme? Uses tints and shades of one color.

Describe an analogous color scheme? Uses 3 colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel.

Describe a complementary color scheme? Uses 2 colors that are opposite to each other in the color wheel.

Describe a split-complementary color scheme? Uses 3 colors, 1 color and 2 colors adjacent to its compliment.

Describe a triadic color scheme? Uses 3 colors that are equally spaced around the color wheel.

What colors are considered to be warm colors? Yellow, orange and red.

Describe a warm color scheme? Is a bold and energetic color scheme.

What colors are considered to be cool colors? Blue, green and violet.

Describe a cool color scheme? Gives the impression of calm and rarely overpowers the message of the design.

Why is important to consider which colors are being used within a design? To convey the right tone and message.

Podcast #1 Elements of Design

What does it take to create good graphic design? Requires understanding of elements and principles of design.

What is the difference between elements and principles? Elements are the important parts of a design which can be isloated in a visual design and principles tell us how we should organize the elements on a screen or paper.

Name the six (6) elements of design. line, shape or form, space, texture, value and color

What can lines aid in, when alone or combined with  other lines or shapes? Readability, appearance, and message of a design.

Which lines suggest a feeling of rest? Why do you think? Horizontal because the lay straight.

Vertical lines communicate a feeling of what? Why do you think? Loftiness because they suggest an overpowering grandeur.

What lines suggest a feeling of movement? Why do you think? Diagonal because they suggest a feeling of direction.

Soft, shallow curved lines suggest what? Why do you think? Comfort, safety and relaxation.

These lines suggest confusion and turbulence? Why do you think? Deep, acute curves because they're curvy.
